Killer Chocolate Cake

In a search for the ultimate chocolate cake, WBCN radio, in Boston, sponsored a Killer Chocolate Cake contest during the late 70s. Hundreds of recipes were submitted, baked, sampled and judged. This is the winning recipe. It is absolutely unbelievable. You sure better love chocolate.

After many years I can also assure you that this is as close to foolproof as baking gets.  Mistakenly set the oven for 300 degrees?   No problem, just cook it longer.  Once when the family was at our place New Hampshire's White Mountains our propane ran out when this cake was in the oven.  We called the gas company and 2 hours later we fired up the oven once again - never having removed the cake.   Sometime later we removed the cake and it was awesome!  Truly inspirational.

1 package Duncan Hine’s Devils Food Cake
1 small package instant chocolate pudding
1 12oz package chocolate chips - preferably milk chocolate
2 large eggs
1 ¾ C whole milk
4 oz walnuts (optional)

Ignore cake mix directions! Mix all ingredients in bowl. Pour into a greased, floured, 9x13" pan. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for approximately 40 minutes. Cake is done when cake springs back when the top is lightly pressed. Because of the chocolate chips the toothpick test probably won’t work.
