Carol's Fresh Apple Bread

From a recipe passed down from her mother, Carol fills the house with the wonderful aroma of cinnamon and clove when she bakes this delicious apple bread.  We like to serve it warm with whipped cream cheese.  Yum!

2 cups    apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped
½ cup    Crisco (or other shortening)
1 cup    granulated sugar
1 large    egg
½ cup    whole milk
2 cups    AP flour
1 teaspoon    baking soda
½ teaspoon    salt
½ teaspoon    ground clove
1 teaspoon    ground cinnamon
cup    chopped pecans or walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, clove and cinnamon.  Cream together the shortening and sugar.  Add the egg and beat to combine.  Combine the dry ingredients with the egg mixture.  Fold in the apples and chopped nuts.

Pour batter into a greased, 9" loaf pan and bake for one hour.  Let stand to cool before removing from pan.  Optionally sprinkle with confectioners sugar.
